Bird Watching in the Mahaica River
At 4:30 am, we will pick you up at your hotel in Georgetown. We will set off along the Demerara coast to reach the Mahaica River.
After an hour-long drive, we will board a boat and cruise upstream at sunrise in search of local birds. The highlight will be the Hoatzin, the national bird of Guyana.
During the boat ride, we will learn about the unique characteristics of the Hoatzin. This bird has an intestine similar to that of cows and goats and is a direct descendant of the prehistoric Archaeopteryx.
We will also spot other species such as the blood-colored woodpecker, the white-bellied grosbeak, the crab hawk, the green-tailed jacamar, and the little Cuckoo. Additionally, we may see otters and monkeys along the Mahaica River.
Throughout the tour, we will learn about the flora along the river. We will return to the mainland for a local breakfast at a nearby restaurant.
At 9:30 am, we will start our return to your hotel in Georgetown, concluding the tour at approximately 10:30 am.
