On this tour into the dark, storied past of Guyana, you'll uncover the history of Georgetown's slave trade and enjoy a traditional Guyanese cooking class.
Description
We'll pick you up from your hotel at the designated time to embark on a Georgetown tour that delves deep into Guyana's history, particularly its connections to the dark legacy of slavery.
Our first stop will be at the 1763 Monument, honoring the first slave rebellion in Guyana. Here, we'll reflect on the lives of the country's slaves and their motivations for rebellion.
Next, we will visit the 1823 Rebellion Monument to discuss the role of the Church and abolitionists during the rebellion.
We will travel to Victoria, the first town in Guyana purchased by freed slaves, and then proceed to the Buxton neighborhood, significant in the slaves' struggle for freedom.
The itinerary includes a visit to the train station that former slaves targeted in a protest against taxes imposed by the governor, with insights from a former raider. We will also explore the Buxton Amistad Museum for more history on slavery in Guyana.
Our last stop includes a cooking class at a restaurant where we will prepare traditional dishes such as cook-up rice, metemgee with pumpkin dumplings, and congee. We will conclude our tour by enjoying our meal while listening to a traditional live music show.
After 6 hours of cultural immersion and culinary exploration, we'll bring the tour to an end.
