On this tour into the dark, storied past of Guyana, you'll uncover the history of Georgetown's slave trade and enjoy a traditional Guyanese cooking class.
Description
We'll pick you up from your hotel to embark on a Georgetown tour focused on Guyana's history, specifically its ties to the legacy of slavery. Our first stop will be at the 1763 Monument, a tribute to the first slave rebellion in Guyana, reflecting on the lives of the country's slaves.
Next, we'll visit the 1823 Rebellion Monument to discuss the role of the Church and abolitionists during the rebellion. Following this, we'll travel to Victoria, the first town in Guyana established by freed slaves, and then to the Buxton neighborhood, significant in the struggle for freedom.
The tour includes a visit to the train station involved in protests against high taxes imposed by the governor, with insights provided by one of the actual raiders. We will also explore the Buxton Amistad Museum for additional context on Guyana's history of slavery.
Finally, we'll head to a restaurant for a cooking class featuring traditional dishes like cook-up rice, metemgee with pumpkin dumplings, and congee. We'll conclude the tour by enjoying our creations along with a traditional live music show.
After a total of 6 hours of cultural immersion and culinary exploration, the tour will end.
