2-Day Expedition to the Aral Sea

Day 1: Nukus to Aral Sea



Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel in Nukus at 8:30 am, setting off towards the Aral Sea on a scenic 450-kilometer (280-mile) route.



As we travel, several stops are planned to uncover hidden gems in this captivating region of Uzbekistan. Our first stop will be in the district of Kungrag, known for being one of the ancient trade hubs. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore the lively bazaar and wander between stalls brimming with local goods.



Next, we continue towards Sudochye Lake, which is linked to the Aral Sea via a channel. Although the lake's waters have receded, we can observe the diverse range of birds that call this area home. Remarkably, over 230 species of birds have been documented in this ecosystem.



Eventually, we will reach our destination at the Aral Sea, specifically at the yurt camp where we will set up camp for the evening.

Day 2: Aral Sea to Ship Cemetery and back to Nukus



After enjoying a breakfast with views of the Aral Sea, we will head to the ship graveyard of Moynaq, a remarkable locale steeped in unique history and stunning vistas. Here, we will delve into the stories surrounding this terrain, which was once part of the expansive Aral Sea.



What happened to the water? Why are these ships left behind? We will uncover the narrative behind this significant environmental disaster that took place decades ago in Uzbekistan.



Our next destination will be the Mizdakhan necropolis, adjacent to the remnants of the Gyaur-Kala fortress. We will explore one of the most ancient and frequented pilgrimage sites in the nation, revealing its intriguing history. Did you know its name translates to "the fortress of non-believers"? You'll discover this and much more during our visit!



By the end of our journey, we will return you to your hotel in Nukus between 4:30 and 5 pm.

Accommodation



This expedition includes one night at a yurt camp by the Aral Sea. These accommodations consist of spacious, comfortable tents suitable for up to 4 people. Experience life closer to nature and feel the essence of nomadic living!
