Explore the remarkable Yellowknife Ice Road with our engaging excursion. This route traverses the breathtaking landscapes of the Northwest Territories, painstakingly constructed each January.
Yellowknife Ice Road Excursion
Our adventure begins at 2 pm with a pickup from your hotel in Yellowknife, followed by a journey to the serene shores of the Great Slave Lake. During winter, this expansive body of water freezes, creating the extraordinary Ice Road.
Throughout this experience, we will traverse, drive, and even recline on this remarkable winter pathway that is only accessible from December through April. Along the way, we will observe traditional boat houses lining the lakeshore and uncover the rich traditions of the local inhabitants who reside in these structures.
As we continue, we will visit the stunning snow castle, a magnificent fortress situated directly on the Ice Road. This seasonal landmark, uniquely styled each year, stands as a testament to winter artistry. Capture memorable photographs alongside its intricately crafted walls and turrets as a keepsake of your adventure.
The Ice Road serves as a vital link between Yellowknife and the First Nations community of Dettah. Here, we will delve into the rich heritage of this culture that has flourished in this Canadian region for countless generations.
Concluding our exploration, we will retrace our path across the Great Slave Lake via the Ice Road, returning to your hotel by 3:30 p.m.
The Snow Castle
The snow castle is accessible only during March. If your visit occurs prior to this month, you will witness the castle's construction in progress.
