Clifford's Tower Ticket
Your exploration of Clifford's Tower will transport you on a journey through history. Constructed under the rule of King Henry III, this enduring site has served as a royal mint and a formidable medieval stronghold. Remarkably, it stands as the largest remaining structure of York Castle.
As you tour the tower, you will uncover an essential aspect of York's past. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it functioned as a treasury, prison, and a seat of monarchy.
In 1684, a devastating fire led to the destruction of the tower and most of the castle's buildings. It was promptly reconstructed and, in subsequent years, served as a prison and courtroom during the 18th and 19th centuries, solidifying Clifford's Tower as the key surviving remnant of York Castle.
Visitors can now access the roof terrace of Clifford's Tower, where panoramic views of the historic core of York, its medieval architecture, and the Cathedral await.
