Baeza: A City of Three Cultures Free Tour
This free tour of Baeza begins at number 8 of Portales Zapatería at the indicated time. We will start with a brief introduction to Baeza, recognized as one of the 15 Spanish World Heritage Sites, before walking through its historic center. The first stop is the Paseo de la Constitución, formerly the city's bustling market.
Next, we'll explore Baeza's trade, highlighting the main goods exchanged among its diverse cultures. We will then visit the origins of its University and the Santísima Trinidad Secondary School, specifically the classroom where Antonio Machado taught from 1912 to 1919.
Continuing to the Plaza de Santa Cruz, we'll view the church there and the Palacio de Jabalquinto, both significant to the three cultures of Baeza. After discussing this connection, we'll proceed to the Plaza de Santa María.
Here, we will see the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady, built on the site of an ancient mosque. The current bell tower was once a minaret. We will explore the surrounding streets rich in Muslim heritage, recalling film scenes from Captain Alatriste. We will conclude with a lookout view of the olive groves and enjoy an olive oil tasting at a local location.
After 1.5 hours, we will finish this free tour of Baeza at the Plaza del Pópulo, close to the starting point.
