On this private tour of Ferrara, you'll explore the medieval alleys and Renaissance boulevards with a guide exclusively for you.
Tour Description
We will meet at the Castello Estense to begin a 2.5-hour private tour of Ferrara. The city was ruled by the Estense Lordship for more than 300 years and has been a World Heritage Site since 1995. Ferrara is also noted as the Italian capital of cycling.
The tour starts in the courtyard of Castello Estense, a key symbol of the city originally built as a fortress and later as a ducal residence. You will see its terraces, balconies, and towers.
Next, we will visit Piazza Savonarola and Piazza Cattedrale, featuring the remarkable façade of the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral and the Ducal Palace, now the Town Hall. Nearby is the Loggia dei Merciai, a site of medieval commerce.
We will walk through the medieval streets to the oldest part of the city, particularly Via delle Volte, to discuss the Po River and its ancient ports. The tour includes a stroll through the narrow streets of the Jewish ghetto, home to a prominent Jewish community.
The tour concludes at Corso Ercole I d'Este, where we will see the Antica Enoteca Al Brindisi, known as the oldest tavern in the world, and finish at the Palazzo dei Diamanti, a late 15th-century building.
