Discover the Cultural Gems of Kowloon – Half-Day Private Tour
- 4 heures
This excursion provides a unique chance to mingle with the locals and gain an insight into their everyday life. The tour will take us to the fascinating Bird Garden. It was a tradition in past times for wealthy people to have songbirds in cages in their homes. Our visit will provide an insight into this tradition through interaction with residents who maintain this cultural practice.
We also head to the colourful Flower Market, a place packed with a blaze of exotic blooms and scents that stimulate the senses. The dozens of shops and wholesalers sell auspicious blossoms and luck-bringing houseplants to an enthusiastic crowd all year round. The lead up to Chinese New Year is when things really heat up as families flock to the market to select flowers and plants that the purchasers believe will bring good fortune as the new lunar cycle begins.
Included on the tour is a visit to the Jade Market where hawkers sell various shades and qualities of the prized stone. The Chinese people believe jade has great spiritual value in warding off evil when carved into certain shapes of animals, such as wealth (deer), good fortune (tiger) and power (dragon).
The discovery continues to the Wong Tai Sin Temple. This impressive shrine represents the three main religions of China: Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. The temple is dedicated to Wong Tai Sin, a shepherd who earned immortality through his good deeds. The temple is a shining example of traditional Chinese architecture, with red pillars, a golden ceiling and ornate latticework. This temple may well house the largest concentration of fortune-tellers in Asia. Those who want to have their fortune read can shake a bundle of fortune sticks until one falls out, exchange it for a piece of paper and have a clairvoyant interpret the future.
