Discover one of the most beautiful villages in Basilicata on our Melfi Private Tour. You'll be accompanied by an expert guide as you explore the rooms of the Norman Swabian castle and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
Melfi Private Tour
At your chosen time, we'll meet at the entrance to the Castle of Melfi. Your guide will be waiting for you outside this important fortress, one of the largest in southern Italy. The castle stands atop a once volcanic hill and has a history dating back to the 11th century, originally built by Roberto il Guiscardo and later enlarged by Frederick II of Swabia. Notably, six papal councils were held here, including one by the antipope Anacletus II.
On the ground floor, you'll visit the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi, where you'll see artefacts from the Vulture area, such as Daunian ceramics and bronze vases from the Greeks and the Etruscans. In the Clock Tower, a highlighted exhibit is the 'Sarcophagus of Rapolla', a Roman sarcophagus dating back to the second century AD.
The tour will also include a visit to the historic centre of Melfi and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1055 on Roger Guiscard's orders and retaining its bell tower from 1153. Inside, you'll observe the 18th-century coffered ceiling and other Baroque elements.
After exploring the town's key sights, we'll conclude our private tour of Melfi.
