Wilderness, Waterfalls & Wildlife! Walk amongst the giants on the Tall Trees track, see spectacular Russell Falls & Horseshoes Falls, visit the local Tassie Devils at feeding time & finish the day with spectacular views of Hobart from the summit of Mt. Wellington.
Mt. Field offers a variety of walks in one of Tasmania’s oldest National Parks. Most famous for Russell Falls & the Tall Trees track we explore the various walks in this diverse Park which is a short 1.5 hr drive from Hobart.
Russell Falls is easily Tasmania’s most recognisable waterfall with its 3-tiered drop. It is an easy and enjoyable walk along a beautiful forest track among mixed forest and temperate rainforest species. This is Tassie’s most photographed waterfall, and we soak up the awesome view before continuing our walk. Just beyond Russell Falls, we climb the stairs to Horseshoe Falls, a majestic waterfall snuggled in the forest, which some regard as even more impressive than Russell Falls!
A short 30-minute circuit trail takes us around the Tall Trees Track. High above us stand the giant Swamp Gums around 80 metres tall.
This is a series of short, spectacular walks amongst the cool and quiet rainforest, eucalypts, streams, and local wildlife.
We drive higher into the National Park entering the alpine zone, although the weather here can be a little wild & woolly, the walk is certainly worth it. We walk around Lake Dobson on the Pandani Grove Trail (1.5km/40mins). Along this trail, we see some remarkable plant life as we walk among Pandani, alpine gums and tree-ferns. There is also a stand of Pencil Pines, which are an ancient conifer that is endemic to Tasmania. Soak up the wilderness and surrounding mountain air in this lesser-visited region of the park. Lake Dobson is 1000m above sea level, it is often covered in a layer of ice and surrounded by snow in the winter months. Snow flurries can also occur during summer! Bring a warm jacket for this walk.
We enjoy a lunch break in one of the numerous beautiful settings at Mt. Field National Park before continuing onwards for the day.
We visit Bonorong Wildlife Park which is home to many of our rescued and well-loved wildlife. Tassie Devils are close up; wallabies are freely hopping around the park and many more of our local favourites are easily discovered here. We time our visit here for a Tasmanian Devil feeding, a fun and interactive experience with our special endangered Devils.
To top off this very Tasmanian day we head to the summit of Kunanyi/Mt. Wellington. Standing high above Hobart at 1271m on a clear day is nothing short of spectacular. The views from the top are expansive. This is a fantastic way to wrap up a day exploring many of Tassie’s most unique and noteworthy experiences, rainforests, waterfalls, wildlife, and fabulous scenery.
