Taking the road from Obersalzberg, Adolf Hitler’s former home and southern headquarters, to the Eagle’s Nest is an experience in itself. Blasted out of solid rock in a record thirteen months, the road is a one-of-a-kind and impressive work of engineering that climbs up the Kehlstein Mountain towards the Eagle’s Nest car park.
The building itself was a project by Martin Bormann and was presented to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday as a teahouse for diplomats. It escaped bombing during WWII and has since been open to the public as a restaurant and historical monument. The stunning views over the Berchstesgadener Land could almost make you forget the building’s start, but the building and brass-lined lifts that take you up through the heart of the mountain into the restaurant, also serve as a stark reminder of the power of the National Socialist regime.
