From Amsterdam by Boat: The Windmill Village of Zaanse Schans

In Amsterdam north, on the jetty of the former historic NDSM yard, the ship is waiting for you. After we have cast off the mooring lines, we are directly on the ‘IJ’. Here we sail between the large cargo ships and perhaps a passing giant cruise ship.

We set course in the direction of Zaandam. We sail through the port area of Amsterdam, the second largest port in the Netherlands.

After we have passed through the ‘Wilhelmina lock’ we sail up the river Zaan. This was from 1800 the center of the "food industry". Especially cocoa imports by the Amsterdam harbor led to growth and flowering of initially small companies. Today these companies are among the largest in the world. The cruise on the river Zaan through the world's oldest industrial area offers views on old warehouses and historic factories.

In good weather you can enjoy the panoramic deck of the ship, in bad weather you have the comfort of the ship's luxurious interior, where the catering is also located.

We moor at the Zaanse Schans. Here you have 2 hours to walk around and explore the village. The Zaanse Schans is a residential area in which the 18th and 19th centuries are brought to life. Stroll past the bakery museum and enjoy the smell of fresh cookies, or take a look at the warehouse where clogs are made. You should be sure not to miss the cheese factory, pewter foundry and the various windmills. The Zaanse Schans is a unique part of the Netherlands, full of wooden houses, mills, barns and workshops.
