Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at Saint Demetrius Orthodox Cathedral and, once assembled, we'll begin this guided tour of Berat, also known as the 'city of a thousand windows', due to its cluster of white-fronted houses.
After an introduction, we'll drive to Berat Castle, located 200 metres (656 ft) above sea level. This site, one of the largest inhabited fortresses in the Balkans, contains over 500 residents in its 120 medieval houses. We will explore its streets and key points such as St. Mary of Blachernae Church, the church of St. Nicholas, the Acropolis, and the White and Red Mosques. A viewpoint stop will offer scenic views.
Next, we'll visit the Gorica district and the Mangalem district, crossing the Gorica Bridge in the first district. We will then proceed to Mangalem via the suspension bridge, known for its steep cobbled streets and long vertical houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, symbolizing Berat. Here, we will visit the Helveti Tekke and the King Mosque for insights into the city’s Muslim heritage.
Finally, we'll pass through Republika Boulevard to conclude the guided tour after approximately 3 to 3.5 hours at the starting point.
