Discover the famous Tavole Palatine and learn more about the history of Metapontum on our Metaponto Archaeological Park private visit. You'll explore this place and see why its charms left Pythagoras in awe.
Metaponto Archaeological Park Private Visit
At the agreed time, we'll meet at the entrance of the National Museum and start our private visit around the Archaeological Park of Metapontum.
During our visit, we'll take a journey through history to the ancient city of Metapontum, founded by Greek colonists in the 7th century BC in a fertile area between the Bradano and Basento rivers. It was an important hub of Magna Graecia's grain trade.
As we walk through the ruins, we'll see the remains of temples dedicated to Apollo, Athena, and Aphrodite, the agora of Zeus, and a theatre with a semicircular cavea. We'll admire the Tavole Palatine, dedicated to the goddess Hera, with fifteen of the original thirty-two columns remaining. This temple was also known as the "School of Pythagoras" where the philosopher taught during his later years.
Afterwards, we'll visit the National Museum to deepen our knowledge of this part of Basilicata's history and observe artefacts found around Metapontum and in the nearby town of Pisticci.
Having spent 2 hours touring this historic place, we'll finish our private visit, allowing you to continue exploring the Lucanian archaeological site on your own if you wish.
