On this private tour of Caltagirone, we will explore the Sicilian city renowned for its ceramic creations and Baroque and Art Nouveau monuments.
Description
We will meet at the entrance of Caltagirone's Public Garden, known for its Art Nouveau elements, including an Arab-style stage and the Belvedere Theater. Our journey will take us past the Museo della Ceramica along Caltagirone's main street to the historic center, where we will see the Tondo Vecchio, an 18th-century monument used for open-air performances.
The tour continues along the San Francesco Bridge, noted for its five arches and local ceramic vases. Built in the 17th century, it connects two of the three hills on which the town is located. We will explore Baroque and Art Nouveau churches and palaces, culminating at the Cathedral of San Giuliano, featuring a 48-meter bell tower, majolica dome, frescoes of Old Testament scenes, and ornate Baroque wooden decorations.
Nearby, we visit the Piazza del Municipio, surrounded by structures such as the neoclassical Palazzo dell'Aquila and the former Palazzo Senatorio, now the Luigi Sturzo Gallery. The tour concludes at the Santa Maria del Monte staircase, a 17th-century landmark linking the historic center to the modern part of the city, adorned with colorful ceramic tiles. This site becomes central during celebrations like the Infiorata and the Patron Saint festival.
