Discover one of Ireland's most culturally rich cities on this walking tour of Galway. We'll explore iconic historic landmarks and atmospheric neighbourhoods while learning about the city's history.
Galway Walking Tour
We will meet outside St Columba's Credit Union office on the edge of Eyre Square to begin this walking tour of Galway.
Starting from our meeting point, we'll walk around Eyre Square, where we will see The Browne Doorway, originally the entrance to an influential family's home, moved to Eyre Square in 1905.
Another monument in the park is the Quincentennial Fountain, designed by architect Eamon O'Doherty. This structure, shaped like the sails of a boat, was unveiled in 1984 to commemorate Galway City's 500th anniversary as a borough.
Next is Lynch's Castle, a 16th-century structure now functioning as a bank, which was previously owned by a powerful family and served as a hotel.
We will pass by the Galway Market, open year-round on Saturdays and Sundays, offering a variety of food and craft stalls. Following that, we will stroll down Kirwan's Lane, the medieval heart of Galway, showcasing 16th and 17th-century architecture in what is known as the Latin Quarter.
As the tour concludes, we'll visit The Spanish Arch, originally built in 1584. Lastly, we will cross Salmon Weir Bridge to Galway Cathedral, ending the tour after 1.5 hours. Slán!
