Discover one of the most beautiful villages in Basilicata on our Melfi Private Tour. You'll be accompanied by an expert guide as you explore the rooms of the Norman Swabian castle and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
Melfi Private Tour
At your chosen time, we'll meet at the entrance to the Castle of Melfi. Your guide will be waiting for you outside this famous fortress, which is one of the largest in southern Italy. The castle, surrounded by ten towers, stands atop a once volcanic hill overlooking the town. Its history dates back to the 11th century when built by Roberto il Guiscardo and later enlarged by Frederick II of Swabia, who used it as his summer residence. The castle has hosted six papal councils, including one by the antipope Anacletus II.
On the ground floor, you'll visit the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi, showcasing artefacts from the Vulture area, including Daunian ceramics and bronze vases by the Greeks and Etruscans. In the Clock Tower, see the Roman sarcophagus known as the 'Sarcophagus of Rapolla', dating back to the second century AD.
The tour continues to the historic centre of Melfi to visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1055 under Roger Guiscard, with restorations over the centuries and only the bell tower from 1153 remaining. Inside, view the 18th-century coffered ceiling and Baroque-style elements.
After exploring the town's main sights and the cathedral, we'll conclude the private tour of Melfi.
