Join us on a private guided experience at the Padula Charterhouse, where we will unveil the wonders of one of southern Italy's most stunning and lesser-known sites. This journey will take you through the tranquil cloisters, the ornate baroque church, and the various rooms of this historic monastic complex.
Tour Overview
At a time that works for you, we will gather at the entrance of the Padula Charterhouse to commence our exploration of this remarkable monastery, recognized as a World Heritage Site.
Referred to as the Monastery of San Lorenzo, this significant 14th-century structure stands as the second-largest Carthusian complex in Italy and ranks among the largest in Europe. Throughout our guided exploration, you will wander through the cloisters, examine the kitchens and refectory, and admire the church's remarkable Baroque architecture and treasury.
During our time at the Padula Charterhouse, we will delve into its intriguing past. Did you realize that this site was plundered by soldiers under Napoleon and served as a prison during World War I?
Next, we will visit the Archaeological Museum of Western Lucania, located within the monastery grounds. Here, you will find a collection of ancient artifacts, including vases, coins, and everyday items. These historical pieces span from the protohistoric to the Hellenistic eras.
After a 2-hour guided visit, we will conclude our tour within the complex, allowing you the option to further explore the monastery at your own pace should you desire.
