Phnom Kulen, the most sacred mountain in Cambodia. Kulen is undoubtedly the holiest mountain in Cambodia, a very active pilgrimage site and a picnic destination for Khmer families.

Few foreigners visit this magnificent site, making it a very unique destination. An hour and a half drive from Siem Reap, we pass through local villages, farmland, rice fields and temples before reaching a trail through dense jungle to the top of the mountain.

Here stands Preah Ang Thom, a 16th century Buddhist monastery, famous for the giant reclining Buddha carved into the top of a 20m boulder. We climb the wooden stairs to a platform surrounding the 17m long Buddha, where monks and devotees bow, burn incense and leave fruits.

We continue downstream to the magnificent series of tiered waterfalls. The water holds special religious significance for Hindus, thanks to the hundreds of phallic images carved into the sandstone beds along the shady stream. The opportunity to walk directly into the shallow river to photograph the sculptures and underwater carvings is simply amazing. The river then drops about 4m to a landing where court officials once bathed. The water continues to cascade for another 20m, creating a pool where the masses once washed themselves.

Itinerary

8:00 AM: Pick-up from your hotel.

9:30 AM: Depart for Phnom Kulen National Park, passing through charming villages and rice paddies.

11:00 AM: Arrive at the base of Phnom Kulen Mountain and begin the trek through lush jungle.

12:00 PM: Reach the summit and discover the impressive reclining Buddha at Preah Ang Thom.

12:30 PM: Descend the mountain and explore the enchanting waterfalls adorned with ancient carvings.

14:30 PM: Enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural pools or relax by the riverbank.

15:30 PM: Begin the return journey to Siem Reap.

17:00 PM: Arrive back at your hotel.
