Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the ruins of the Douglas C-47B Dakota aircraft and start our guided tour of the underground Željava Air Base. We will first explore the interior of this aircraft. Following this, we'll head to the runways to understand the experiences of pilots flying during the Yugoslav wars.
Built during the '60s, this air base lies in the Plješevica Mountain, on the border with Bosnia, designed to withstand nuclear attacks. This base was the largest underground air and military base in the former Yugoslavia and one of the oldest in Europe.
During the tour, we'll explore the tunnels that stretch approximately 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) to understand life at the base during its operational days. The tour concludes after two and a half hours at the starting point.
