This exclusive exploration of Ortigia invites you to delve into the rich history of the Sicilian city of Syracuse while uncovering its hallmark sites. Let’s embark on this journey!
Private Tour of Ortigia
We will convene at the scheduled hour at the Umbertino Bridge, a vital link between Syracuse’s mainland and the historic island of Ortigia, recognized as the birthplace of the city in 734 BC.
As we stroll through this fortified area, you will gain insight into the city's beginnings. Among the prominent landmarks we will encounter is the remarkable Temple of Apollo, revered as the oldest Doric sanctuary in Sicily. We will walk by Piazza Archimede, paying homage to the legendary mathematician of Syracuse, alongside the picturesque fountain of Diana.
Wandering through the charming streets of Ortigia, we will arrive at Piazza Minerva to behold the majestic Cathedral of Syracuse, constructed upon the remnants of the ancient Temple of Athens.
We will pause in front of its stunning façade, an exquisite blend of baroque and rococo architecture, and will continue to appreciate neighboring structures such as the Palazzo del Vermexio, the Town Hall's seat, the Palazzo Beneventano, and the Santa Lucia alla Badia Church, which is home to a masterpiece by Caravaggio.
The tour then leads us to the waterfront promenade known as Alfeo, where we will admire the Arethusa fountain and the striking outline of the Castello Maniace.
Your experience will reach its conclusion at this point, approximately two hours following our initial meeting.
