With this excursion to Churubamba & Papahuasi, you'll visit a historical and culturally relevant valley in the province of Huánuco and an old colonial hacienda.
Churubamba & Papahuasi Valley Excursion
We'll pick you up at 8 am from your hotel in Huánuco and proceed along the left bank of the Huallaga River to the Papahuasi Valley, where the pre-Inca culture developed.
During the trip, we'll appreciate the landscapes of this valley. Our first stop will be in Churubamba, where we will visit the district museum, displaying objects of the Papahuasi culture and other pre-Columbian civilizations, notably the Papahuasi mummies.
We will then visit the Church of Santa Cruz, a 17th-century temple linked to Father Alonso de Abad, who discovered the Boquerón del Padre Abad canyon. We’ll explore the history of this Franciscan monk.
Next, we will view the seven colonial chapels surrounding the Church of Santa Cruz in Churubamba, representing the seven falls of Christ, significant during Huánuco's Holy Week. These include the Church of San Juan Bautista in Cascay, the Church of San Pedro in Utao, and the Church of San Nicolás in Tambogan, dating from the 17th century with displays of traditional clothing and Quechua handicrafts.
We will continue to a trout farm to learn about local trout farming and then visit the colonial hacienda of Quenra to understand the lifestyle of 1200s colonial landowners. Finally, we’ll return to Huánuco and drop you off at your hotel at 2 pm.
