At the arranged time, we will gather at the Kanazawa station and set off on a journey by public bus to the historic village of Shirakawago. Prepare to delve into a remarkable community, where Gassho-style houses, constructed in the early 1800s, are still inhabited today!

As we navigate through the picturesque Japanese Alps, take in the stunning landscapes that unfold around us. Following a one-hour journey, we will reach our destination, nestled high in the mountains. Our first visit will be to the Wada-House, recognized as the largest traditional Gassho-style farmhouse in Shirakawago.

Within this enchanting village, we will encounter the highest concentration of Gassho-zukuri style houses, each featuring distinctive thatched roofs engineered to endure heavy snowfall. Interestingly, these structures are fastened together solely with ropes—no nails used! As a side note, the term gassh?-zuruki translates to 'praying hands'—can you see the connection?

Accompanied by our guide, we will embark on a one-hour exploration of Ogimachi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we will discover insights about the local lifestyle and the narratives behind these historic dwellings. Some of the houses have stood for over 250 years, with several converted into open-air museums, showcasing the village’s rich history.

Afterward, you will have an hour of free time to enjoy lunch at one of the nearby local eateries.

Finally, we will embark on our return journey to Kanazawa, concluding our day approximately 8 to 8.5 hours after we first set out.
