Points of interest: Arch of Galerius, St Dimitrios, Heptapyrgio, Old Walls, White Tower
We start our guided tour in the downtown at this awe-inspiring Roman triumphal arch, part of Emperor Galerius’ monumental complex, decorated with intricate marble reliefs.
Although it now stands alone in the middle of a busy modern street, the Arch was originally just one part of a grand, covered processional route that connected Emperor Galerius’ palace to the Rotunda. The marble reliefs on the arch were meant to be viewed while passing through a ceremonial corridor lined with columns and statues, almost like walking into a giant illustrated book of the emperor’s victories.
Even more intriguingly, if you look closely, you’ll see that some of the sculpted battle scenes are unfinished—historians believe the work was halted abruptly, possibly due to Galerius’ death or a shift in imperial priorities, leaving these 4th-century “incomplete panels” frozen in time for over 1,600 years.
